MICHAEL HUGH HARVEY, J.P., PHD

Michael Hugh Harvey, Ph.D., in Education and Leadership; and a Justice of the Peace J.P. currently serves as Lead Pastor of the Flatbush SDA Church and Vice-Chaiman of the Board of Trustees Northeastern Adventist Academy Brooklyn PK-8. Having served at Three Conferences and Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica as Pastor; Publishing and Youth Director at West Jamaica; President of North Jamaica; Education, Public Affairs & Religious Liberty Director at Central Jamaica; Empowerment Training and Education Projects; President of the Staff Senate; and Vice President at the University.

Michael Hugh Harvey, J.P., Ph.D. He is admired for his strong work ethic, administrative and organizational skills, commitment to shared goals, deep sense of loyalty, and independence of mind. Dr Harvey’s capacity to nurture, develop, and transform organizations while impacting the lives of individuals best defines his life as a transformational servant-leader. The seeds were sown before for many of these qualities but were enhanced. At the same time, he served as a District Pastor, Publishing Director, and Youth Director in the West Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

In November 2005, he was elected President of the North Jamaica Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. The record turnaround time in which the Mission was transformed and accorded the complete status of a Conference in January 2010 underlines Pastor Harvey’s remarkable capacity as a high-performance leader.

Dr. Harvey is a dynamic and passionate communicator known for his charismatic speaking skills. He uses these skills to motivate and inspire audiences to support noble causes while building consensus. Dr. Harvey is a dynamic, decisive, transformational servant-leader with a ‘can-do’ confidence. He is a man with an open mind and a compassionate heart. One who shows genuine concern for the well-being and development of others acts with integrity and encourages critical and strategic thinking.

His pursuit of knowledge and excellence marks Dr. Harvey’s academic journey. He earned a B.A. in Religion and Theology from West Indies College, an MSc. in Counselling Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Education and Leadership from Northern Caribbean University. Not only has Dr. Michael H. Harvey touched the lives of many persons through his pastoral and evangelistic endeavors, but his active involvement in community outreach activities has impacted a broad cross-section of persons. He served on the Community Counselling and the Restorative Justice Board (CCRJC), the Manchester Dispute Resolution & Violence Prevention Committee as Chairman, Director of the National Housing Trust, and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), Vice Chairman for the Board of Management at Bellefield High School while living and serving in Jamaica.

In December 2023, he implemented Dr. Michael Hugh Harvey’s “Leadership Excellence Awards” for Exemplifying Consecrated, Committed, Competence, Ethics, and Values in Leadership. Recognizing community, civic, and religious leaders for their dedication and commendable contributions towards the betterment of organizations and broader society.

This highly motivated man of God has further contributed to the Church through his research on “The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Practices on Pastoral Effectiveness.” Dr. Harvey is the author of two previously published books “Leadership Matters: A Practical Professional Perspective,” and recently “7C’s: 21st Century Skills That Transform.  He has also published “The Importance of Training Faculty to Integrate Faith with Learning” in the Journal of Adventist Education, July- September 2019 edition.  He’s one of the contributors to “The Gift-What The Sabbath Means To Me,” published in May 2021. On September 22, 2021, he published in the Message Magazine “Mental Wellness and Decision-Making in The Noisy COVID-19 Environment.” Dr Michael Harvey is married to the former Loyda Broomfield, and they have been blessed with two grown children, Yolisa Kayla and Michael Hugh, Jr.  The life of this devoted leader is guided by the philosophical views that ‘The world cannot stand in the way of a person who knows where he or she is going’ and that ‘Service is the return one gives for one’s existence.’
